If you’d asked me a few weeks ago if we had any travel plans for the summer, I’d have told you not much. But after a very busy few weeks, we suddenly find ourselves with two road trips and a couple of flights booked. It’s going to be a lot of fun, but we’re also going to be spending a lot of time in the car and on planes. If I know one thing about traveling with kids, it’s that their tummies need to be kept full. There is nothing worse than a hungry cranky kid. Since it’s summer, I decided to make up an easy snack mix recipe for s’mores snack mix that would be easy to make ahead and that my kids would love to snack on.
I obviously needed chocolate, graham crackers and marshmallows in the mix. I decided to add popcorn as the base since it’s easy to make, inexpensive and my kids love it.
Regular sized graham crackers aren’t great in a snack mix so I picked up Horizon Snack Grahams. The smaller shapes work great in a snack mix. My kids also love the cow and earth shapes. The grahams come in three flavors – honey, cinnamon, and chocolate. I picked out the honey but any of the flavors will work. The grahams are also great for snacking on their own.
I didn’t really measure the ingredients. I filled a bowl with popcorn and added in handfuls of chocolate chips, Horizon Snack Grahams, and mini-marshmallows.
Once the mix was all together, I filled plastic sandwich bags full of the snack mix. But they looked a little boring. So I dug through my stash to see if I had something to make them a little more “campy.”
I found a couple of bandannas from the dollar store I had leftover from making a bandanna tablecloth last year. I just tied the corners together to package them up. If I’d had a stick, I’d have added that, too! I love how cute they turned out. They are perfect for backpacking, camping, hiking, or just traveling.
My kids loved this this snack mix! They were hovering around me as I made it and the bowl disappeared quickly. We will definitely be making this easy snack mix recipe for our travel this summer.
